Marie Jean Phillip was an important woman who contributed to the education of learning American Sign language for dear children. Marie was blessed with a beautiful family of deaf parents and two deaf sisters. Growing up in Connecticut she was able to attend the American School for the Deaf. She loved the deaf culture and by age sixteen she was able to attend Galludet University. Marie wanted to expand her horizon and decided to attend a hearing school. Although she was terrified to interact with hearing people Marie soon learned that it was a new experience for her hearing peers as well. They put in the effort and a few students actually took a class and learned ASL. Marie’s spark for English and ASL grew and she eventually became an American Sign Language teacher for English grammar and writing. Her contributions have made a generous impact on the Deaf Community.
